Born and raised in Hawaii on the island of
Oahu, Doreen K. Nagano is a completely
self-taught artist. As a little girl she drew
obsessively, having a fit if her drawing didn't
come out the way she envisioned it. It is this
perfectionist attitude that eventually enabled
her to become adept at painting portraits.
Growing up during the 60's and 70's, she
witnessed the influx of new cultures into the
islands and developed an appreciation for all things cultural.
In 2001, she became intrigued with the beauty of glass and set about
researching the process of creating stained glass, which she
immediately took to. After much trial and error, she has developed her
own style, in which the beauty of the "local" culture is expressed.
"Creating an art piece is like having an obsession. You can't leave it
alone until it is perfect."
